About Paul Katsus
To get children interested in fishing, make it a successful and fun outing. The first step is getting them catching fish. Lots of fish that are small fish are much more important than an occasional large fish. Remember it's the attention span of the child you don't want to lose. Take them a few times to fishing spots where they can expect to catch numerous fish, so the novelty and excitement builds to the point they look forward to going fishing. Catching is more important to the child than simply fishing.
Make it easy! A simple spin casting rod of about five feet should do the trick. As the child matures you can add more advanced equipment, techniques, lures, and more difficult species of fish. A local pond with lots of panfish can be the ticket for the ideal beginning point for the child to try out his equipment with a good odds of success. Live worms are hard to beat for bait. As they are usually quickly devoured by these rascals.
The icing on the cake would be (if the fish are large enough) is to clean the fish and have them for dinner. You can except a boost in pride and self esteem when the child eats the very same fish he/she caught that day. The level of excitement will continue through to the end of the meal. A few fruitful fishing trips and the child will be excited about the prospects of future trips. Even if you have a less than exciting day of fishing, the foundation that you have already set will not diminish the anticipation and thrill of fishing. In short, you will have a fishing partner for life!
